Food security is at the core of sustainable development in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).
This document is intended for decision-makers across the Pacific with an interest in community-based resource
management and securing food resources against the impacts of climate change.
Considering the concerns of climate change and its impacts on coastal fisheries resources, SPC implemented the ‘Monitoring the Vulnerability and Adaptation of Coastal Fisheries to Climate Change’ project with funding assistance from the Australian Government’s International Climate Change Adaptation Initiative (ICCAI).
This study under the International Waters Project (2004) is aimed at determining both the social and economic context of resource depletion in Yap State, as well as the socioeconomic impact of the implementation of MPAs. The project is focused on four clusters of villages on the main island group, in the districts of Rumung, Maap, Gagil and Gilman
This thesis used a combination of sediment, coral, fish, climatic, and oceanographic data, and focused on the Pohnpei Lagoon, examining a range of natural and human issues in the marine environment both at the local level (focusing on that within the Pohnpei Lagoon) and regional level (focusing on the western Pacific region).
The primary objective of this thesis is to investigate the reliability of water supplies for four atoll islands in Yap, Micronesia and examine how the reliability changes during drought and future precipitation patterns. The islands studied for this thesis include Eauripik (Eauripik Atoll), Falalop (Ulithi Atoll), Ifalik (Ifalik Atoll), and Satawal (a reef island). This study also aims to give water resource managers information and comprehensive tools to improve management of rainwater and groundwater resources.
Protected Areas (PAs) that are active and proposed on the Pohnpei main island
The FSM SoE Report reveals the current state of knowledge about the environment in FSM along the following thematic areas: atmosphere and climate, water, land, marine, biodiversity, built environment, and culture and heritage.
This dataset shows the extent and basic types of sea grass areas around Pohnpei. It classifies sea grass areas by one of the three main species (Cymodocea rotundata, Thalassia hemprichii, and Enhalus acaroides) and the level of coverage (describes as continuous, aggregated, and isolated). The data source is McKenzie, L.J. and Rasheed, M.J. (2006), Seagrasses: Pohnpei Island and And Atoll Marine Assessment, Technical report of survey conducted 26 October 3 November 2005, SeagrassWatch HQ, DPI&F, Cairns, 60pp.
This is the Pacific Studies Series for CLIMATE PROOFING - A Risk-based Approach to Adaptation Report by Asian Development Bank, published 2005
In 2018, the Federated State of Micronesia through the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management (DECEM) with the support of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program (SPREP) assisted in the formulation of the Federated States of Micronesia National Environment Management Strategy (NEMS) 2019–2023.
The FSM NEMS was developed based on data and information in the FSM State of Environment report, formed
as a prerequisite of the NEMS.
The KSDP is a four-year, high-level, document that articulates Kosrae government priorities and development sector vision along with specific targets for focusing workforce efforts and allocating resources. The aims of the KSDP include the following:
• Provide government and sector officials and leaders with long-term guidance for decision-making
• Communicate a prioritized plan to sector stakeholders for addressing a wide range of activities
• Provide a means for communicating government and sector priorities to Kosraean residents
Slides from the FSM Inform workshop, introducing the Inform project objectives and the software tools being proposed.
User manuals and quick start guides for using the FSM Inform Environment data portal.
This plan highlighted the five key principles for successful adaptation and reduction of present and future coastal hazard risks to Kosrae communities and infrastructure over the next few generations;
A report that was prepared for the FSM National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan project
This report reviews environmental law in the Federated States of Micronesia, including recommendations for changes to aspects of the law. The focus of this review is upon environmental law at the national level in FSM, although section 5 includes information on Pohnpei State environmental law.
Under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) - member countries are implementing the PoWPA. This is FSM's Action Plan for PoWPA and Target 11. Target 11 is a contribution towards ensuring that ecosystems, species and genetic diversity are safeguarded in both the land and seascape by ensuring that key habitats are protected and that species migration and movement can occur. Protected areas are a cornerstone of 5 conservation actions and as such are one of the main tools at a country’s disposal to reduce habitat loss.
A project technical report of the International Water project - the objectives are to prepare and conduct an ecological baseline survey of the nearshore reef fisheries at proposed MPA sites in each of four IWP communities in Yap and prepare a monitoring plan and support the involvement of the community in baseline assessment and monitoring work.
